Rottnest Island

Doittour.com
Rottnest Island is as rich with history as it is with the diversity of animals that reside here. It is believed that around 6500 years ago the oceans rose and separated the island from the mainland. It is also believed that this was the time the Aboriginal people left Rottnest Island. It wasn't until 1658 when the Europeans found Rottnest Island and not until 1696 when it was given the name by William de Vlamingh when he mistakenly thought the abundant quokkas were rats and named the island 'Rottnest' meaning rat nest. In 1838 it became a penal settlement for Aboriginal people and in the early 1900's it became a tourist destination as ferries ran families over on Sundays to make the most of the spectacular location. 1914 through to 1915 it became a prisoner of war camp holding over 900 inmates and again in 1938 it became an army outpost where two large guns were set up but never fired in anger at the enemy. The 9.5 inch gun can still be viewed today. Rottnest Island is now well known as a tourist destination with plenty to offer all travellers.

Uluru, Ayers Rock or simply the Rock

Doittour.com
Uluru
Uluru was named Ayers Rock  in 1873 by a surveyor William Gosse to honour South Australian chief secretary Sir Henry Ayers, prior to that it was known as Uluru by the Anangu people in Yankunytjatjara or Pitjantjatjara language. In my research I have found many differing meanings for Uluru, some say it is known as the meeting place , great pebble,  watering hole,  Earth mother or Rainbow dreaming, whilst some say that the word Uluru has some connection to the word shadow or shade and that Uluru is simply the place that encompasses the land area around this magnificent monolith. Whatever the case Uluru is truly spectacular.

Fact snap shot of Uluru:

  • The first European person to climb Uluru was William Gosse.
  • Climbing Uluru is considered disrespectful by the local custodians as it crosses a sacred site.
  • Ayers Rock was recognised as a national park in 1950.
  • Nearest Urban Centre: Alice Springs, NT (437km away)
  • Nearest Airport: Ayers Rock Airport (8.2km away) and the Alice Springs airport (Uluru is approx 450 km away)
  • State: Northern Territory (capital: Darwin is 1395km away)
  • Uluru is 862.5 metres above sea level and is approximately 342 metres high.
  • Uluru has an area of 3.33 sq. km and a circumference of 9.4 km
  • Local Aboriginal people  (Anangu) regard Uluru as a sacred site.
  • Uluru is Australia's largest monolith.
  • Uluru and Kata Tjuta are just the visible tips of massive rock slabs.
  • Between 400000 and 500000 people visit Uluru every year
  • Winter nights can get as cold as negative 8 and summers days 48 degrees however middle of summer averages 38degrees

The Aboriginal custodians of Uluru call themselves Anangu, and ask you to do so, as well. They are often referred to as the Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara people.  Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara are actually the two languages spoken by the Anangu.

A visit to Uluru and  is a must for all Australian and international visitors. Uluru Tours can be purchased on Doittour.com and fantastic prices are guaranteed.

Hervey Bay so much more then gods waiting room

Doittour.com20 years ago Hervey Bay was known as gods waiting room, a place where the age demographic was more comfortable with blue rinse hair dye and lawn bowling injuries. It was kept a secret so that the fishing would stay uncrowded, the white beaches untouched and the streets nice and quiet.

When driving into Hervey Bay it is still a beautiful quiet town however it is a town that offers everything a traveller requires and July to November are the perfect times to visit.  Less then 3 hours drive from Brisbane, Hervey Bay can provide you with a magic get away, whether you are looking to relax on the beach, sample some of the fantastic cafes and restaurants, get into some jetty or off shore fishing, whale watching or for the more extreme, launch out of a perfectly good plane from 14000 feet for a Hervey Bay skydive. Hervey Bay can accommodate  all preferences.

For the next 4 months Hervey Bay has a over 1000 special visitors. The migration of the humpback whales to Hervey Bay is something that rivals the migration of the wilder beast of the Serengeti. Sir David Attenborough's favourite place in the world.

Doittour.comIn today's blog I was going to write about the Daintree rainforest and Cape Tribulation. I was going to go into detail about how there are over 3000 plants species, 315 mammals, a quarter of Australia's frogs and roughly half of Australia's bird species but then I found the one reference that no one can disagree with and that was Sir David Attenborough talking about his favourite places in the world. Enjoy.....

When is a team building event not appropriate?

Doittour.com
I am a massive fan of celebrating success in our business. I like share with my staff after we have achieved a goal or reached a milestone and as owner of a business that sells tours and experiences I often like to experience one of the experiences that we sell.

I decided to take  my staff tandem skydiving from 14000 feet for a shared celebration experience, however in hindsight I can see that this may or may not have had the desired effect. For the less adventurous this caused sleepless nights and quite a build up of anxiety, however for others (like myself) this was an unforgettable and enjoyable experience. What is the most unusual team building activity you have either been taken on or taken your staff on? For some great ideas contact us on 1300654002 or info@doittour.com

Penguins are not the monogamous saints that we have all thought

Doittour.com
For many years penguins have fooled us with their idealistic monogamous relationships. However recent advancements in the genetic study of penguins has now found out that they don't always stay with the same partner for life and in fact they have an 18 percent divorce rate per year. Further marking their clean slate is that scientists have now found out that 7percent of doting fathers to be are looking after the eggs but are in fact not the genetic father of the baby. Yes I know it sounds like a Jerry Springer show but penguins are not the wholesome creature we were once led to believe!

What does this mean? Well if you want to head out for a Phillip Island penguin tour, out of the estimated 32000 penguins 5760 are getting divorced this year and for every 1000 penguins born 70 are living a lie as to who their father really is.

This year the Little Penguins (and that is their species breed, not just their stature) of Phillip Island are having one of their best breeding years since 1990. This is due to the eradication of feral animals such as foxes as well as a warm Autumn last year. If you are looking to learn more about these beautiful but sometimes a little naughty creatures then now is a great time to jump on board a Phillip Island penguin tour. Check out some great last minute deals on Doittour.com call 1300654002 or info@doittour.com

People travel from all around Australia and the world to visit Fraser Island, to experience the beautiful fresh water lakes, pristine creeks, untouched rain-forests and the hundreds of kilometres of spectacular beaches.  However Fraser Island's smaller cousin has been forgotten which makes it the ideal place for an experience that is less congested. Now I am not say Moreton Island is better nor am I saying Fraser Island is, but for ease of travel, less people, Moreton island I believe is a brilliant alternative. Yarra Valley wine tour or the Great Ocean Road tour?

Great Ocean Road tours
Yarra Valley wine tour or the Great Ocean Road? This is the question I would like to pose. If you only have one day to visit either of these amazing locations which one would you choose?

I know that for some they will already be singing "wine glorious wine" would always win hands down. Visiting wineries like De Bortoli or Yering Station get me salivating straight away, but for me it is a little more difficult. The Great Ocean road is not only an incredible drive on the  world's largest war memorial. Yarra Valley wine tour or a Great Ocean Road tour... if you only have one day. Great deals at Doittour.com contact us on 1300654002 or info@doittour.com
