How to meet the Cairns locals ...

If you really want to meet the locals then you really need to get to the Great Barrier Reef and get your hair wet. The locals I refer to of course are the fish and other creatures that inhabit this famous reef. More fish species can be viewed on the Outer reef locations than in around the islands however this requires a full day adventure on one of the bigger snorkel and dive boats.


Most day cruises from Cairns include a full day at the Outer Reef and aim to let you see as much reef as possible by either visiting two different reef locations or by docking at an Outer Reef pontoon. 


Some day tours include semi-submersible and/ or glass bottom boat tours (weather permitting) as well as a buffet lunch. Most Cairns Outer Reef cruises depart from the Cairns Marina at the Reef Fleet Terminal and offer pickup from Cairns and Northern Beaches hotels at an additional charge.


Use of snorkelling equipment is included in an Outer Reef cruise and a guided snorkel tour is recommended for beginning snorkellers (additional fees apply for this on some boats). 


Scuba diving is available for certified divers or an introductory experience is available for those that have not tried it before. Often you can save money by booking the scuba diving component when you book your cruise however it can be purchased on-board at full rate.
